💧 Water Filtration
A plumbed espresso machine requires inline filtration — scale buildup is the leading cause of boiler failure, and chlorine in municipal water suppresses flavour. Target 75–150 ppm TDS at the machine inlet. Free State tap water runs moderately hard, so a 2-stage carbon + scale inhibitor setup is the minimum. Get a TDS reading first (see below) before sizing a system.

💡 Before buying: All systems use standard ¼" push-fit fittings — easy DIY install on the cold water line before your machine's inlet. Size by monthly litre throughput, not by machine count. Undersizing a cartridge means inconsistent water quality as it degrades. Replace cartridges annually or per the manufacturer's volume rating, whichever comes first.

Test your tap water before investing in filtration so you know what you're dealing with. A basic TDS pen gives you a PPM reading in seconds. Winburg municipal water — test it fresh from the tap, then again after your filter, to confirm the system is working.

💡 Target readings: Raw tap water above 200 ppm = scale risk, filter essential. 75–150 ppm = ideal espresso range. Below 50 ppm = too soft, will taste flat and may corrode boiler. Test monthly after installation — a rising reading means your cartridge needs replacing.
